RALLY Foundation
background image
What did we do?
A 3-day sweep of Hoffman Triangle area of Central City
We knocked on all the doors
Completing at least a visual assessment of every residence
We surveyed everyone who answered
Successfully completed a household survey on 93 residences
We asked them about their neighbors
Collected information from “neighborhood informants” on 88
households
All together, we collected demographic, needs and assets
information on 120 households. We visually assessed all 1,211
residences for occupancy.
background image
What did we ask?
The number of questions on our survey:
16
This was a rapid assessment activity.
Objective: rapid collection of highly focused
information to support decisions about what
to do for Hoffman.
Data was collected as per CSI steering committee
request.

background image
Why did we ask these questions?
Because we want to know the number of people
potentially served in Hoffman
How many kids, elderly, renters, female-headed households
What services/assets do they have access to, and
where are they getting them.
What are their current needs and problems.
What kind of activities and services should this group
think about pulling together to offer.
What might a community center or safe haven do,
and where might it be located.
Because Rosalind asked us to.

background image
Take away points
Hoffman is primarily a neighborhood of adults.
Probably 70% over the age of 18
Many of the concerns reflect this age distribution
The elderly may be a smaller but significantly
underserved group.
Home ownership may be lower than we estimated in
2006
41% in 2006 compared to 30% in 2007
background image
Take away points
The people who felt that they did not have
good access to services outnumbered
people who did in every service category
except health and clinical services
Usually by a lot: 2 to 3 times as many
Suggests gaps and potential for intervention in a
variety of areas
background image
Take away points
Major service gaps and problems which are on
people’s minds in Hoffman include:
Finding affordable housing
Fixing their homes
Dealing with FEMA and Road Home
Cleaning up their neighborhood
Accessing affordable food/groceries,
Elder care and services,
Small business support and job training
Youth services
Also: crime, open schools, transportation, mental health/coping
issues
background image
Take away points
Concerns about crime, education and youth
also seem to be on the back of people’s
minds
Some sort of entrepreneurial activity could be
a good idea, even though the “Café
Reconcile” concept was ranked low
Small business support, job training, and youth
services did seem to be priorities.
Food access is also a major issue.
background image
Take away points
There is evident community interest in the placement
of a center or safe haven in Hoffman
The location does matter, and will potentially impact
use.
Transportation IS an evident issue in this neighborhood
Jackson and Simon Bolivar is maybe too far away
Broad and Hoffman/Taylor Park both seem like options
People overwhelmingly want to see Hoffman School
reopened.
